On the 31st of October 2020, the BAC Mooting Society hosted a Virtual Mini Moots 2020 event. The event was held as a webinar on Zoom, from 9:30am to 1:30pm.
The Mini Moots 2020 was organised and carried out with the aim of introducing new society members, who had never mooted before, to the art of mooting. The moot department and the committee members, carried out the event with the full intention of inspiring and motivating the new society members to take part in the upcoming Internal Championships.
In order to achieve this, lecturers were invited to judge this event. A total of 10 Committee Members and 5 judges lent a hand in this event.
Some of the committee members logged onto Zoom around 8:30AM with others logging on at around 9:00am. Anushka created waiting rooms, breakout rooms and assigned each and every committee member into the available rooms. Anushka and Jay then admitted the participants, spectators and judges into their respective rooms. During this event, Anuska was the host, other committee members were co-hosts, the members of the moot department acted as bailiffs during the entirety of this event.
Due to the amount of participants, the event was split into two sessions. One was conducted around 10:00am and the second commenced around 12:00pm. Lecturers judged the participants and constructive feedback was given. The judges were – Mr Andrew Kalish, Mr Jagan, Ms Anne, Ms Puvaneswary, and Ms Kirthana. Shawn briefed the judges in between sessions and took down the names of skilled participants based on the judges’ opinions.
Constructive feedback was given to participants in hopes that they will be able to improve themselves and partake in the Internal Championships with impressive skill and confidence – having now familiarised themselves with the way a moot competition is conducted and what is expected of them in such an event.
Committee members were interactive and engaged from the start of the event until the very end. Despite the overwhelming amount of participants, spectators and judges, Anushka and Jay handled the event efficiently. Waiting rooms and breakout rooms were created before the event started, names of each participant were already pre-assigned to the breakout rooms. Spectators were admitted after the participants and judges were assigned to their rooms. Bailiffs interacted with the participants and engaged in a friendly conversation while they awaited the judges. Committee members dressed formally despite it being a virtual event. Internet connections of every committee member was stable.
The session came to an end around 1:55pm. This is the second event hosted by the BAC Mooting Society Committee in the year 2020. Although there were some minor issues present, the committee members found solutions or quick method to improvise. Overall, it was a successful, informative, and highly beneficial event.
