The MPU2412 Serving Our Society (S.O.S) module, encourages students to support and participate in both local and international community work. This IACT module thoroughly discusses the concepts of community engagement projects and provides the scope for students to organise and host such events.
This semester, students were asked to connect with Mercy Malaysia to organise a fundraising event. Mercy Malaysia is an active platform for Malaysians to come together and contribute to the international humanitarian arena.
This project was introduced with the intention of providing students first-hand experience on how to successfully run an online fundraising event by themselves; from the most basic planning to proper execution. The lecturer involved mentioned how this sort of activity not only pushes these students to step out of their comfort zones, but it also exposes them to certain industries and different experiences.
The fundraising event that the students had planned, was held online for a good five weeks through a series of live stream events. The S.O.S students also collaborated with peers who were taking a Public Relations Campaign Strategies module, to ensure that the events would be strategically organised and well broadcasted.
After much detailed planning and scoring successful collaborations, the organising team had put together an impressive programme, with live stream events that highlighted and discussed some key topics of today’s day and age. The S.O.S members were not afraid of tackling issues surrounding racism, mental health and sexism, which made their fundraising event all the more attractive and influential.
Through sharing the relevant links and advertising material via the world wide web and various social media platforms, the fundraising event managed to attract a large volume of attendees and successfully raised the necessary funds for Mercy Malaysia. The entire experience was instructional and enlightening for the students involved. Not only did they actively participate in a community engagement program but they also learnt valuable event planning and communicative skills.
