The Leo Club of Brickfields Asia College got off to a roaring start on their first project for the 2020/2021 fiscal term with a visit to Tender Hearts Café, a social enterprise run by special needs youths on Saturday, 4th July 2020. Initiated by former Leo Club President, Leo Timothy Tuan with the support of Leo Kabil Varmen and current Leo Club member, Gavrie Ang, this passion project forms part of a long-term collaboration with the social enterprise located in Summit USJ.
The café conceptualised in mid-2016 by Mrs. Sharon Lee, a mother to a special needs child (and a former Leo Club member, no less!), aims to provide employment opportunities to special need youths and job training in a safe work environment with others having similar conditions. Having been in business since April 2018, the café has also ventured into catering for corporate events with their signature chocolate chip cookies being a crowd favourite.
As part of the Leo Club’s continued support of the cafe, members normally pitch in to provide additional assistance at the cafe. For this month’s Tender Hearts Visit, three LEO club members, Leo’s Gavrie, Kabil and Sofia, volunteered to help run the café from meal preparation to serving customers and cleaning the premises before closing for the day.
Overall, it was a productive visit and a great way to kick-off the new fiscal term in line with LEO Club’s global objectives i.e. to provide the youth of the world an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.
Kudos to the Leo Club of BAC on such a great start to the 2020/2021 term!
